    1. Normandale College Prep

What should high schoolers know about college preparation?

Jack Ellis offers some advice based on what you'll experience in college . . .

"I would tell a 9th or 10th grader in high school, that the best way to prepare is to take the necessary courses and get experience in a world language but especially focus on math and writing. It will save you time and energy and money if you're ready to work at the college level. College math is becoming a requirement in more degrees now, even in the arts and humanities. Also, take a writing course your senior year if you can—it will help prepare you for writing in college classes."

      1. Visual Learning and Student Achievement

Here is a short summary of what you'll find in the white paper,

Visual Learning and Student Achievement: Theoretical Foundations and Educational Applications.

Increased student performance, improved retention, and stronger critical thinking skills with visual learning

Alan Paivio's work, Imagery and Verbal Processing , documented the importance of having students record and represent information in more than one way. Paivio's research suggested that information that is interconnected verbally and visually facilitates conceptual connections, helping learners understand relationships and recall related details.

A work published in 1999, How People Learn: Brain, Minds, Experience, and School , states, "helping students to organize their knowledge is as important as the knowledge itself, since knowledge organization is likely to affect students' intellectual performance."

Concept mapping techniques support growth in knowledge, understanding, and memory

The process of concept mapping has been researched extensively by cognitive psychologist David Ausubel.
His book, Educational Psychology: A Cognitive View , indicates that concept mapping helps students construct meaning and relate it to the structures of prior knowledge. Other visual learning techniques, such as webs and idea maps, capitalize on the same principles, helping students show many different information patterns and connect that information to prior knowledge.

Major quantitative studies support visual learning in the classroom

Noted education researcher and author Robert J. Marzano, executive director of the Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory ( McREL ), noted in his book, Classroom Instruction that Works , that the identification of similarities and differences is, in many ways, the "core" of all learning. He stated, "Representing similarities and differences in graphic or symbolic form enhances students' understanding and ability to use knowledge."

Marzano has also stated that the use of graphical organizers in general, is among the 10 most effective strategies, ranking higher than other commonly used techniques.
