Metropolitan Development. New Book on Downtown Minneapolis Destruction.
The August 5-11, 2002 issue of Skyway News features a front-page story by David Brauer on the demolition of 40% of downtown Minneapolis for the Gateway project. From 1959 to 1963 . . . 200 buildings on 22 blocks were demolished in the name of urban redevelopment.
 
There is no small irony that the recent Milwaukee Road hotel complex and new development just north of the Hennepin Avenue bridge feature facades that look remarkably like those demolished forty years ago. The book is: “Down and Out: The Life and Death of Minneapolis’ Skid Row” by Joseph Hart.
