Operational Continuity Assurance Preview

BCP-IIA: February - 1999

aka "Business Continuity Planning"

Modern day business depends on the smooth functioning of interrelated systems, procedures, processes, services, and personnel. It is, therefore, critically important that management make plans to deal with unexpected disruptions and to protect the business in times of crisis. This is achieved by a process known as business continuity planning (BCP). Synonyms for BCP include business resumption planning, disaster recovery planning, crisis management, or contingency planning.

BCP, of necessity, involves the entire enterprise because business crisis is rarely isolated to a single operation, function, or unit in the business. A properly designed BCP minimizes the impacts of unexpected business disruptions, whether they arise from natural disasters such as earthquake or hurricane, or man-made events such as accidents, acts of terrorism or sabotage, war, or other unpredicted crisis.

Because information systems form a critical component of the operation of most businesses, a significant aspect of BCP
involves protecting information systems and recovering
from any disruptions in service.

Auditors, in particular IT auditors and internal auditors, are often called upon to participate in the business continuity planning process. ITAudit Forum will publish a series of articles on this important subject; your feedback and comments would be greatly appreciated. (Please send comments to editor@itaudit.org.)

The following BCP topics will be covered, starting with this issue:

  • Project initiation and management
  • Risk evaluation and control
  • Business impact analysis
  • Developing business continuity strategies

In Part 2, we will explore issues surrounding
business impact analysis and developing
business continuity strategies.
