Friends of the Minnesota Valley

WELCOME!

The Friends is a 501(c)3 non-profit, grass-roots environmental organization founded in 1982 to advocate for the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

The founders of the Friends deserve credit for the creation of the wildlife refuge in 1976, having generated strong local and Congressional interest in protecting the lower Minnesota River Valley as a refuge for wildlife.

Today, our organization remains an active partner with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, opposing external threats to the Refuge, lobbying for increased land acquisition and operational funding for the Refuge, supporting Refuge events PLUS programs, and increasing local awareness of the valley as a special place for wildlife and people.

Recognizing that the Refuge is the downstream recipient of all activity in the uplands and adjacent lands, the Friends is actively reaching out into the watershed to work with all stakeholders; local governments, businesses, environmental and sportsmen groups, schools, and citizens alike to develop long-term solutions to our common environmental problems.
