Dear Fellow Futurists,
I have discovered many secrets in recent months on my journey to seeking a literary agent and getting my first book published. In sharing this, I became aware that some of you are recently on the same quest.
Whatever your topic‹whether it's regarding futuring, or like my book that involves another subject matter entirely‹there would be numerous benefits of sharing our collective experience. Therefore, I'm excited to unveil a Writers SIG.
Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, October 24, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Earl's home, 365 Summit Ave., in St. Paul. We will have a guest speaker and our first topic will include an overview of the publishing industry and how to obtain a literary agent.
When attending the National Writers Union, I met Denise Martineau, an award-winning entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, a published author, and atom smasher. Denise has written and edited books on technology, business and science, and she will be our first guest speaker. Denise has been profiled in Entrepreneur Magazine and the San Francisco Business Times. She has previously published with McGraw-Hill, Sybex Computer Books, the University of California, and served as an Acquisitions Consultant with John Wiley & Sons and Prentice Hall Press. Denise is currently writing her next book on the second women who won the Nobel Prize.
I will speak at a future Writers SIG on my experience of publicizing New York Times best selling author, David Lifton, and how to publicize and solicit media exposure for a book‹specifically how to receive national and local exposure from the print, radio and television media.
I invite you or anyone you know to take part, whether you are already published, if you're looking for a kick-start, or you've just fanaticized about the possibility.

The Foundation for the Future manages a number of programs designed to further its goal of understanding the factors affecting the quality of life for the future of humanity.
Framtidsbygget is "an institute of foresight where companies, large and small, government authorities and organizations find resources for meeting their needs for long-term development. Their needs are matched to a rich network of futurists in Sweden and internationally who contribute their experience when appropriate."
The Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies (HRCFS) was created by the Hawaii State Legislature in 1971. Placed within the Social Science Research Institute at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, it serves as a futures research arm for public agencies, private groups, and individuals who require assistance in locating future-oriented information or experts. Dr. Jim Dator of the Department of Political Science of the University of Hawaii at Manoa has been the Director of the Center since its founding. The legislation creating the Center stated that it is to encourage and promote the research, development, and use of futures studies--theories, methods, and designs.
The Implications Wheel® is a graphic tool developed by noted process futurist Joel Barker that is used to explore potential results or implications of making a single decision or change, a trend, event or emerging issue. It can assist in generating anticipatory thinking and enhancing decision-making in a broad spectrum of settings from schools to corporations.
The Institute for Alternative Futures (IAF) is a think tank located in Alexandria, Virginia. IAF was founded in 1977 by Dr. Clement Bezold, Dr. James Dator, and Alvin Toffler. The mission of IAF is to help individuals and organizations more wisely choose and create the futures they prefer. IAF's services enable our clients to clearly understand the accelerating pace of change and focus their energies on clarifying their highest aspirations. IAF's for-profit consulting firm, Alternative Futures Associates (AFA), applies the same techniques to evaluate the potential futures facing corporations.
The New Zealand Futures Trust is an independent non-profit organization whose members aim to identify developments and changes affecting the lives and aspirations of New Zealanders, and to promote thinking and debate about possible futures.
Interesting site by Joshua Calder on "the future in movies." Calder derives depictions of the future and "significant events that have yet to occur" from such films as "Aliens," "Soylent Green," "Star Wars," and "Timecop" and suggests implications for futures-oriented thinking.

"In the 20th century, an awareness of the increasing pace and magnitude of change has spurred the creation of a new academic discipline known as Futures Studies. While only a prophet or fortuneteller would claim the ability to foretell the future, Futures Studies aims to understand and cope with the long-term forces of change as they affect both the planet and people -- both the whole of humanity and the individual. Futures researchers track technical innovations, value shifts, geopolitical tides, environmental perturbations, economic developments, demographic patterns, and other trends of change. From these data they create scenarios of possible alternative futures, which are then used as contingencies within strategic planning initiatives."
The World Future Society is an association of people interested in how social and technological developments are shaping the future. The Society was founded in 1966 and is chartered as a nonprofit educational and scientific organization in Washington, DC, U.S.A. The Society strives to serve as a neutral clearinghouse for ideas about the future. Ideas about the future include forecasts, recommendations, and alternative scenarios. These ideas help people to anticipate what may happen in the next 5, 10, or more years ahead. When people can visualize a better future, then they can begin to create it.
To mark the year 2001--the true start of the Third Millennium--the editors of The Futurist magazine have selected their annual "top 10" forecasts for the future. These forecasts, included in the 10-page Outlook 2001 report, came from leading scientists, researchers, and scholars whose views of the future have been published in The Futurist during the last year.
World Futures Studies Federation is a forum where the stimulation, exchange, and examination of ideas, visions, and plans for alternative, long-term futures can take place. The Federation promotes and encourages futures studies as well as innovative interdisciplinary analysis.
