Software bugs do more damage than viruses and computer burglars combined. Even programs that appear to work can contain dangerous bugs. Computer breakdowns pose a risk to the public and the incidence doubles every two years. An autonomous system is a complex system that can assume almost complete responsibility for a task without human input.

Microsoft Demos Bug
In a demo on Thursday, Microsoft (MSFT) officials used Netscape's browser software to download different versions of RealNetworks streaming-video software, along with Microsoft's own Media Player. Microsoft countered that a bug in RealNetworks' software was to blame. The RealNetworks and Windows media players, essentially "helper applications" for the browser, each use a different mechanism to handle streaming media. In the past, software developers only registered their media players in the Netscape registry, but with more recent versions of Netscape Navigator, they are supposed to register in the Windows root registry.

These seeds can ruin programs, memory, even destroy entire computer systems with one fell swoop. Software can be written that will instruct a computer to do almost anything, and terrorism has hit the Internet in the form of mail bombings.   Often, Trojan Horses are the prime carriers of computer viruses.      Usually hidden  in the operation software of a computer or in a program, the software virus spreads form program to program, or disk to disk.

WASHINGTON - Mark Alberding, a college student in San Francisco, was perplexed: His computer running Windows 95 was working fine until he installed some popular multimedia software called QuickTime. Alberding suspects that in his case, Apple's QuickTime established itself as the default software to view his pictures, supplanting the viewer programs from Microsoft and other companies. In a dramatic demonstration during a Senate hearing last month, Glaser showed his own Real Player G2 software working perfectly on a computer. '' Microsoft's engineers blamed a mistake in Glaser's own software.

"Both the Windows Media Player and the XingMPEG Player have the ability to playback MPEG content," Xing said in its statement. "When the Xing player is installed on a PC with the Windows Media Player, it will replace the Windows Media Player as the default player of MPEG content. Just like the XingMPEG Player, when Windows Media Player is installed after the Xing player, the Windows Media Player automatically becomes the default MPEG player." "For both the XingMPEG Player and Windows Media Player, the last player installed will become the default MPEG player and each follow an identical behavior pattern in this regard," Xing said.
