Professional Certification:
Education, Training, and Certification Program Basics
by: Andy Hagg
Pages: 36; January, 2001
The 2000 CPM/KPMG Benchmarking Survey revealed an insufficiency within the contingency planning arena when it came to the amount of business continuity and disaster recovery training taking place in businesses today.
Broken down by industry segment, we find that the majority of almost all business sectors surveyed reported that inadequate training is taking place (Figure).
Says Strohl Systems' Chris Worton, "This is alarming when you consider that your employees
are the ones who will carry out your plans to achieve recovery and meet recovery time objectives."
One solution to the problem of lack of training for BCP is to utilize a certification program. Such a program can be an effective to educate and train a company's disaster recovery or business continuity planning personnel. And the various institutes who facilitate these programs also seek to advance the credibility and professionalism of the business continuity planner.
Institutes' education programs usually consist of basic and review courses to provide planners with the fundamentals of their profession. Often, a series of advanced courses is available to allow planners to hone their skills in particular specialty areas.
Finally, organizations offering certification programs can serve as information resource centers and provide opportunities for networking with peers through conferences and trade shows.
Getting Personal
The most important consideration to make in selecting a certification program is to examine the individual needs of your employees, your teammates, or yourself. For example, what is your or their current level of knowledge and expertise in the business continuity field? What are the goals for the recovery or continuity group within your organization? How much support are you likely to get for a training or certification program? Is your company flexible with continuing education opportunities? Once these questions are answered, you can begin your search for the right program.
Selecting a Program
In selecting a certification program, it is important to find an organization that has a proven track record. Reputation and credibility within the business continuity community is important, so ask around to discover which organizations are widely known and accepted. The program chosen should be based on a defined and well-organized body of knowledge, preferably covering all levels of instruction, from basic to advanced courses. It is also important to find a program that is updated on a regular basis to reflect the changing trends in the field.
Like with any purchase, examine the terms or added costs before you buy. Be wary of nonrefundable registration fees or otherwise inflexible registration, refund, or cancellation policies; mandatory follow-up sessions that are not part of the original tuition; ongoing association fees; or extra fees for mandatory additional materials. The ideal situation would be to negotiate a trial period or a money-back guarantee.
Lasting Benefits
Professional certification programs exist to acknowledge an individual's professional level of competence in the business continuity discipline. By achieving the minimum set of requirements for a program, an individual is authoritatively endorsed within the business continuity profession and industry. Maintaining that certification over time recognizes an individuals efforts to continually increase his or her knowledge and experience in the business continuity field. Furthermore, employers of those holding the certification recognize the efforts of the individual to develop and maintain a professional standing
