Soap Lake, A Unique Mineral Lake

This Website is dedicated to Soap Lake, one of the most important geographical features created by the Glacial Missoula Floods.  The lake, about two square miles in surface area, is located in the heart of Central Washington at the foot of the magnificent Grand Coulee.  One of the most mineral-rich lakes on Earth, Soap Lake is renowned for its mineral waters’ therapeutic properties.  Soap Lake is also a living laboratory, containing unique life forms that have evolved in the unusual alkaline-saline ecosystem.

On this site you will find information about the incredible natural history of the lake and its surroundings, exciting scientific research and findings including astrobiology, fascinating cultural and therapeutic history, and important information related to protecting and preserving Soap Lake’s unique characteristics.

The Soap Lake Conservancy was formed January 8, 2000 to protect and preserve the lake.  Members are from all walks of life and reside in every corner of the State of Washington and elsewhere.  Anyone who supports the protection and preservation of this unique natural resource is invited to join.

If you have questions about Soap Lake or the Soap Lake Conservancy, or would like to contribute your time, expertise or other support to its protection and preservation, please write to us or email to info@thelake.org.  We are interested in historical documentation including photographs, letters and newspaper clippings about Soap Lake and the surrounding area.

Mission of the Soap Lake Conservancy

We are dedicated to actively improving the economic vitality of the Soap Lake area through education and promotion of the recreational, therapeutic and cultural qualities of the Lake. Inherent in our Mission is the restoration and preservation of Soap Lake as a natural mineral lake.
