The purpose of the Education Institute is to provide an administrative structure that supports faculty of the College of Education in scholarly inquiry and creative collaboration with school and community organizations in Southern New Jersey. The primary goal of the Institute is to provide an outreach and service function that matches the needs of local school districts to the resources of the University. In this capacity, the Institute supports basic and applied research and sponsors graduate courses and professional development designed to improve the quality of education within the region.
- Additional efforts toward fostering student leadership included the first ever "New Student Leaders Retreat" which brought together leaders of the largest student organizations in a three-day collaborative leadership development retreat prior to the start of the fall semester.
- This successful retreat provided the momentum to generate support for and enrollment in the first campus based "LeaderShape" program at the University that will involve 32 students and will be facilitated by a select group of faculty and staff. The LeaderShape Institute is known nationally as one of the premier leadership development programs for young adults.
- In the area of leadership development, the Office of Campus Involvement also continued a leadership development series, initiated during the previous year and designed to provide student organization leaders a systematic method of improving their leadership skills.

PeopleGarden Proceedings of the 12th annual ACM symposium on User interface software and technology November 1999Many on-line interaction environments have a large number of users. It is difficult for the participants, especially new ones, to form a clear mental image about those with whom they are interacting. How can we compactly convey information about these participants to each other? We propose the data portrait , a novel graphical representation of users based on their past interactions. Data portraits can inform users about each other and the overall social environment.
